Charlie Howard $5 Million Dream House
BEDFORD, NH (April, 2010)
– Behind the tall granite wall lies a local mystery.
Some people think a high-profile politician lived there, while
others say famous celebrities once called it home. But most Bedford
residents refer to 182 Meetinghouse Road as “The Compound,” due to
the property containing two homes that were never connected into
“The Kennedys have their compound (on Cape Cod); Bedford has The
Compound on Meetinghouse Road,” said Prudential Verani Realty
Regional Manager Debra Jarvis.
in 1985, original owner Charlie Howard III put $5 million into his
dream house, including $1 million on landscaping and $200,000 on the
600-ton, 6-foot-high granite wall.
Howard was the vice president of the Wall Street firm Thomson
McKinnon Securities and headed its Bedford office. But after being
linked to federal and state investigations of trading in regional
bank stocks and being fired, he sold his “dream house” in 1991.
Compound consists of two homes: a 11,000-square-foot main house,
which contains only one bedroom, a 3,000-square-foot guest house and
three detached garages with space for 17 vehicles. Phase III of the
construction process never took place. It would have added a covered
walk way to the pool and would have connected the guest house and
the main house.
On the inside of the home, an elevator takes guests to the

the wine cellar. There is a two-sided granite fireplace in the
living room and an observation deck on the top floor.

Aurora referred to “The Compound” as having a hotel feel with most
bedrooms facing the olympic-size swimming pool. Also on site is a
granite pond containing 1.5 million gallons of water with a 15-foot
waterfall, which can be used for swimming in the summer or ice
skating in the winter.
“It’s like a paradise vacation, you don’t have to leave,” she said.
Other extras on the property include a wine cellar that holds 18,000
bottles of wine and champagne, a $40,000 tennis court with night
lighting and the 17-car garage containing a Best Car Wash. An
underground tunnel, designed for maintenance, travels from the main
house to the guest home.

Jarvis said. “You won’t see a house of such opulence in New
On Feb. 19, the fourth owners of the “The $5 million Charlie Howard
Dream House” closed on the 5.67-acre lot for $900,000. Although not
the most expensive house sold by Prudential Verani Realty broker
Lori Aurora, it was the most talked-about sale.
